Sage

Salvia officinalis, also known as common sage and garden sage, is an aromatic herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae) that is cultivated for its pungent edible leaves. Sage, a culinary herb with its origins in the Mediterranean, is used fresh or dried to add flavor to a wide variety of dishes, but is most commonly associated with stuffings for poultry, pork, and sausages. The pretty leaves and flowers of some varieties make them popular as garden decorations. Numerous other members of the genus Salvia are also commonly called sage.

Perennial sage can reach a height of about 60 centimeters (two feet). The oval leaves are usually downy and rough; the color can range from gray-green to white-green, and some varieties are even variegated. The flowers are borne on spikes and have tubular, two-lipped corollas, making them appealing to a wide range of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Nutlet fruits develop from the various colored flowers.
