Vitamin E Acetate, also called DL-Alpha tocopheryl acetate, is the most stable form of Vitamin E. It is often used in skin care products because it is stable. Free radicals from oxygen can damage cell membranes, but vitamin E keeps that from happening.
It can stop UV irradiation and lipid peroxidation from making the skin age faster than it should. d-alpha-tocopherol is the best and most active form of vitamin E for people.
DL—Tocopherol acetate is a stable form of vitamin E called an ester. It is often used in cosmetics to prevent or fix damage to the skin. This certified reference material (CRM) is made and certified according to ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 17034.
Vitamin E that is made in a lab does not come from food. Instead, it is usually made from petroleum products. Most sources of extra vitamin E that horses eat are made in a lab (dl-alpha-tocopherol or any form that starts with dl-).
d-alpha tocopherol or tocopheryl acetate is used to label a supplement that comes from natural sources, while dl-alpha tocopherol or tocopheryl acetate is used to label a supplement that is made in a lab.
D-alpha tocopherol oil is made from the distillate of soybean oil, and then it is diluted to different levels with edible sunflower oil. It is a clear, yellow to brownish-red, oily liquid with no smell.
It is usually made by methylating and hydrogenating mixed tocopherols, and it keeps the shape it had before. D-alpha tocopherol oils can be used as natural Vitamin E supplements with a lot of it.
D-alpha tocopherol is a compound that groups together different chemicals, such as tocopherols and tocotrienols. D-alpha tocopherol is the most important one for people.
One of the most important things that vitamin E D-alpha tocopherol does is protect cells from damage. But other functions that have nothing to do with this action have also been seen.

But what do the studies show?
In-vitro studies are used in a lot of the research done on tocopheryl acetate and skin health. This means that the studies were done outside of the body, in cell cultures.
But the Micronutrient Information Center at Oregon State University says, “These models don’t show the complex structure of skin tissues. So, studies need to be done “in vivo,” which means “inside a living organism.”
Some research on the benefits of tocopheryl acetate is promising, but most research on how well tocopheryl acetate supplements work is mixed.
For example, there isn’t a lot of information about how well vitamin E works to treat heart disease, cancer, and brain problems (like Alzheimer’s disease).
Healing a Wound
Studies on how tocopheryl acetate affects wound healing in humans have shown that it doesn’t help in any way.
Studies haven’t shown that applying vitamin E to scars makes them look better. In fact, one study showed that it made some people’s scars look worse and gave 30% of them contact dermatitis.

Improvement in Wrinkles
A study that looked at the diets of Japanese women found that taking vitamin E didn’t make their skin wrinkle. There aren’t many studies that show that vitamin E and oils with tocopherols can keep skin moist.
Cross-sectional studies (studies that look at a specific population to find out things like age, race, location, and social background) found that there was no link between men’s and women’s skin hydration and how much vitamin E they ate.
Two small studies, on the other hand, found a possible link between the skin’s ability to keep water and vitamin E that was applied directly to the skin. Oregon says, “Long-term studies with topically applied vitamin E are needed to find out if these moisturising effects can last.”
Many studies on humans have shown that using tocopheryl acetate to treat skin cancer has no benefit.
When it comes to using tocopheryl acetate to treat side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the results of clinical research are mixed.
These cancer treatments are thought to kill cancer cells by making free radicals, so it makes sense that a very strong antioxidant, like tocopheryl acetate, could reverse the harmful side effects of these treatments.
“What protects healthy cells may also protect cancer cells,” says the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This question is still not fully understood, and patients who want to take more than the RDA of any antioxidant should talk to their doctor.
Many studies have looked at how vitamin E might help prevent cancer. But several very large studies on humans with tocopheryl acetate did not find any evidence that it could help prevent cancer.
Getting rid of inflammation
A randomised, controlled study on humans showed that using vitamin D and vitamin E to treat a skin condition called atopic dermatitis (eczema) was effective.
Keeping AMD from getting worse
A review study from 2017 looked at the first results of the “Age-Related Eye Disease Study (ARED),” which was a very large study with about 4,000 people taking part.
The ARED study found that when people with advanced age-related macular degeneration took supplements with very high doses of vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and zinc, the disease progressed more slowly.
The Micronutrient Information Center at Oregon State University says, “Topical applications of vitamin E may reduce free radical damage caused by pollution, but this has not been well studied.” But vitamin E can give some people contact dermatitis.
What could go wrong?
Even though tocopheryrl acetate is thought to be pretty safe, there are some risks, especially if you take more than the recommended amount. The recommended daily allowance is 15 milligrammes (mg) or 22.4 internal units (IU). In fact, if you take too much vitamin E, you could get sick.
Since vitamin E dissolves in fat, the body can’t get rid of too much of it through the urine. Some studies have shown an increase in mortality rate among people taking large doses of vitamin E, especially in people with multiple medical problems.
Other possible side effects include tender breasts, problems with the ovaries, stomach pain, a rise in blood pressure, or diarrhoea.
According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, if you take more than 400–800 IU of vitamin E every day for a long time, you could get sick.

Vitamin E supplements may also make you more likely to have a stroke or thrombophlebitis, which is swelling of a vein caused by a blood clot.
Because it stops blood from clotting, tocopheryl acetate may raise the risk of having a stroke.
In 2011, a study found that men who took very high doses of vitamin E supplements had a higher risk of getting prostate cancer.
If someone takes a lot of vitamin E, it could make them more likely to bleed. Before taking vitamin E supplements, you should talk to your doctor. This is especially true for people who are taking anticoagulants like Coumadin (warfarin).
Tocopheryl acetate in skin care products could cause a reaction on the skin. If the cream or ointment causes an allergic reaction on the skin, the area where it was put on will turn red or get a rash.
A contraindication is a situation in which a certain medication, treatment, or procedure should not be used because it could be harmful. Often, you shouldn’t take two drugs or supplements at the same time, or you shouldn’t take a drug or supplement if you have a certain condition because it could make it worse.
Some things that shouldn’t be done with tocopheryl acetate are:
Coumadin (warfarin) or other medicines that thin the blood, like aspirin or heparin: With these medicines, you shouldn’t take more than 400 IU of vitamin E per day because it could make you more likely to bleed.
An issue with the heart: In a study that looked at the effects of vitamin E with other supplements like selenium, beta carotene, and vitamin C, it was found that this combination supplement made it harder for other heart-healthy drugs like statins and niacin to lower blood cholesterol.
Chemotherapy or radiation therapy: Taking antioxidants during chemotherapy or radiation therapy could change how well these cancer treatments work.

How to take it and make it
Tocopheryl acetate can be taken as a supplement or put on the skin as a solution. It can be bought in capsules, lotions, moisturising skin creams and oils, anti-aging products, and more. Most vitamin E sold in stores comes in doses that are measured in international units (IU), but you may also see milligrammes listed (mg). 5
How much vitamin E a person needs each day depends on their age and other things, like the condition they are trying to treat. The National Institutes of Health has a list of the average daily amounts that are recommended.
